We happened to have some left over dairy free, egg free artisan white bread we found at a local bakery the day before, and decided to make it into French toast. I have used this recipe many times but never with an artisan bread. It was extra delicious with the fat slices of white bread with a crunchy outer crust. The whole family was sad when the last slice was eaten. We used to think that French toast was not an option without eggs, but this recipe has been a hit every time. My kids especially love it with homemade caramel syrup and coconut whipped cream, but when I’m in a hurry, maple syrup is a great option too.

What kind of bread to choose?

You can make eggless French toast with any bread that is safe for you, but I will say that it tastes the best with thick slices of bread. If you are able to get a bread that has thick slices, or you are able to buy a loaf you can slice yourself, it will be all the better. My kids love white bread the best, but I have used bran bread or whole wheat bread with good results. Many artisan breads are made with yeast instead of eggs, as well as sour dough breads. French bread or baguettes are also a good options for French toast.

Cinnamon chip breads are delicious for French Toast, but if you are also avoiding dairy, this is not usually an option. I have yet to find anyone use cinnamon chips that do not contain dairy. Occasionally you can find a cinnamon swirl bread that is dairy and egg free, and when you find that white unicorn, you will have hit the ultimate French toast bread.

Egg Free French Toast with Caramel Syrup

This egg free, dairy free French toast will have a thumbs up from everyone.  You can use any safe bread, but the thicker the slices, the better.  You can also use maple syrup if you do not want to make your own syrup, but the caramel syrup is a delicious addition.
